Deuba on Bidya Bhandari: Constitution does not bar return to politics

BIRATNAGAR: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that the constitution does not prevent former presidents or vice presidents from re-entering active politics.

Speaking to journalists at Biratnagar Airport on Saturday, Deuba noted that the political engagement of former President Bidya Devi Bhandari and former Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun should not be seen as unusual. He emphasized that the constitution does not bar former heads of state from affiliating with political parties.

The CPN-UML recently decided not to renew Bhandari’s party membership during its central committee meeting on August 5–6. Meanwhile, former Vice President Pun has returned to the Maoist Centre and assumed the position of vice-chair.

Deuba also stated that constitutional amendments will proceed only if a two-thirds parliamentary majority is achieved.

While discussions with other parties are ongoing, no conclusions have been reached. He added that the Nepali Congress has not discussed recalling ministers from the KP Sharma Oli-led government.
