Maoist leaders seek to reconcile with Biplav after his move to form separate front

KATHMANDU: The much-anticipated unification process between the CPN (Maoist Centre) and the Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav’-led Communist Party of Nepal remains uncertain.

Amid this uncertainty, Maoist Centre’s senior vice-chair Narayan Kaji Shrestha ‘Prakash’ and CPN General Secretary Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav’ held an hour-long dialogue on Wednesday.

According to sources, the two leaders met in Kathmandu for nearly an hour, discussing the current political climate, the potential for leftist unity, and the status of the ruling coalition.

This meeting took place shortly after the Biplav-led CPN decided to build a new political front under its own leadership, rejecting a party merger with the Maoist Centre.

The Biplav faction has consistently criticized the Maoist Centre and positions itself as the true representative of the revolutionary movement, aiming to establish its own distinct political identity.

Within the Maoist party, Narayan Kaji Shrestha has been one of the most vocal advocates for left unity. Through this dialogue, he appears to be making efforts to revive the possibility of unification or at least minimal cooperation with the Biplav faction.

Shrestha’s initiative is also seen as an attempt to counter emerging divisions within the Maoist Centre and to rally revolutionary forces under a common platform.

The two leaders are said to have discussed several key issues, including the future of the leftist movement, potential alliances, the need for consensus on revolutionary values and agendas, the ongoing debate between parliamentary politics and rebellion, and their respective views on the power dynamics of the current government.

While the Biplav-led CPN has postponed any immediate unification and is now focused on organizational expansion and forming an alternative political force, it has not ruled out dialogue or cooperation with other revolutionary groups.

Earlier this week, the Maoist Centre had decided in its Standing Committee meeting to pursue unification with the Biplav-led CPN and continue talks with the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led CPN (Unified Socialist). However, after Biplav’s faction declined the proposal, Shrestha initiated personal efforts to bring them back to the table.
