Tarun Dal youths rally in Kathmandu demanding dissolution of central ad hoc committee

KATHMANDU: Members of Nepal Tarun Dal, the youth wing of the Nepali Congress, held a motorcycle rally and staged a protest in Kathmandu on Friday demanding the dissolution of the party’s central ad hoc committee.

The demonstrators argued that the committee, formed after the general convention in 2016, has failed to hold a new convention in nearly nine years, weakening the organization. They called on the party leadership not to extend the committee’s tenure, which was set to expire at the end of March.

The protest began from Old Baneshwar and culminated at the Nepali Congress central office in Sanepa, where the youths chanted slogans and clashed briefly with police while attempting to enter the premises.

Central member Rojan Rai said that the current ad hoc body has been in place for three years without any signs of moving toward a general convention. He said continuing the committee under the pretext of ad hocism is damaging to internal democracy and party youth structures.

The protest follows a large internal gathering of Tarun Dal members who concluded that the current leadership is incapable of conducting the convention and called for a new ad hoc committee to be formed immediately.

Police had to intervene to control the situation after scuffles broke out between protestors and security personnel. No injuries or arrests were reported.
