Committee concludes discussion with lawmakers on Citizenship Amendment Bill

KATHMANDU: The State Affairs and Good Governance Committee has concluded discussions with lawmakers who proposed amendments to the Nepal Citizenship (First Amendment) Bill, 2024, which seeks to revise the Nepal Citizenship Act, 2006.

A total of 85 amendments were submitted by 46 lawmakers, reflecting diverse views on the bill.

During today’s meeting, Committee Chair Ramhari Khatiwada informed that discussions with the amendment proposers have been completed.

He added that the next meeting will include consultations with representatives of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), including its current and former presidents, as well as officials of organizations representing former Gurkha soldiers.

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak urged the committee to finalize the bill promptly and send it to the full House for deliberation.

“This is a highly sensitive issue. Let us pass the bill without delay and put an end to the suffering of stateless individuals,” he said.
