4 killed, 12 injured in separate road accidents in Dhankuta and Udayapur



BIRATNAGAR: Four people lost their lives and 12 others were injured in two separate road accidents in Dhankuta and Udayapur districts.

In the first incident, a passenger bus (Ko 1 Kha 2177) traveling from Dharan to Bhojpur veered off the Koshi Highway at Dhankuta Municipality-6 at around 10:15 AM on May 5 and plunged 50 meters down the road. Fourteen passengers, including the driver, were injured.

A police team from the District Police Office, Dhankuta, responded immediately and transported the injured to nearby hospitals.

During treatment, bus driver Rudra Tamang, 51, of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City-13, and passenger Leela Bahadur Shrestha, 58, of Shadananda Municipality-13, died at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan.

Another passenger, Krishna Kumari Bhujel, 73, of Dhankuta Municipality-6, succumbed to her injuries at Dhankuta District Hospital. Eleven others remain under treatment in Dharan.

Later the same day, at around 4:45 PM, a separate incident occurred on the Madan Bhandari Highway in Chaudandigadhi Municipality-4, Udayapur.

A bus (Ko 1 Kha 4721), carrying wedding attendants from Khotang to Itahari, had stopped when two passengers—Geeta Pariyar, 40, of Tuwachung Municipality-4, and Yujan Rai, 23, of Itahari-20—were struck by a tractor (Na 3 Ta 810) while crossing the road.

Pariyar died during treatment at Municipal Hospital, Beltar, while Rai is receiving care at Neuro Hospital in Biratnagar.

Police have taken both the tractor driver, Bijay B.K., 30, of Chaudandigadhi-4, and the bus driver, Purushottam Pokharel, 36, of Tapli Rural Municipality-4, into custody for investigation.
