Shekhar Koirala criticizes government’s economic management, questions coalition’s legitimacy

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has expressed dissatisfaction with the Congress-CPN-UML coalition government, stating that it has failed to prove its legitimacy.

Speaking at the launch of Dr. Suman Karmacharya’s book ‘Katroma Khaltī’ on Sunday, Koirala criticized the government for not fulfilling the promises made when the coalition was formed, which included constitutional amendments, improving the economic situation, and ensuring good governance.

He stressed  that there has been no progress in these areas. Koirala further remarked that the political situation in the country is currently in a fragile state, with the economic condition deteriorating daily and middlemen exerting significant influence across various sectors.

He said, “There is a growing influence of middlemen at all levels. This government, led by the UML, was formed with certain expectations, but we are not able to move forward with those goals. The constitutional amendments were supposed to be a priority, but it has been nine months, and there has been no progress in this direction.”

Dr. Koirala accused the government of playing with the country’s economy, claiming that it was inappropriate for the government to treat economic matters lightly.

He pointed out that although an ordinance was passed to improve the economic situation, the middlemen’s involvement still seems to persist.

He also mentioned that the promises made by the government such as ensuring good governance and reducing corruption, have not been fulfilled.

Koirala stressed that political will among leaders is necessary to bring about reforms and address the country’s issues.

On the issue of appointing the Governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank, Koirala referred to reports of middlemen interference, warning that such appointments could have negative consequences for the nation.

Dr. Koirala argued that the current coalition has failed to justify its existence and that only strong political will can lead the country towards prosperity and good governance.
