UML General Secretary Pokharel criticizes RPP for ‘undemocratic’ act

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has strongly objected to the recent incident where Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) cadres allegedly smeared black ink on the statue of former Prime Minister BP Koirala in Nepalgunj.

Taking to Facebook, Pokharel criticized those who claim RPP is not just a party but a movement to reinstate the monarchy, stating that their act of such act reveals their true intentions.

Referring to supporters of constitutional monarchy within the Nepali Congress, Pokharel argued that BP Koirala himself would have supported republicanism if he had witnessed the rule of former King Gyanendra.

He added that even Girija Prasad Koirala, who was more inclined toward constitutional monarchy during BP’s era, ultimately embraced republicanism due to Gyanendra’s autocratic actions.

Pokharel urged those who believe democracy and monarchy can coexist in Nepal to closely observe the activities of the RPP, which, he suggested, contradict the principles of democratic governance.
