Nepal Teachers’ Federation announces indefinite academic strike

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Teachers’ Federation, which has been protesting in the capital for the past five days, has announced an indefinite academic strike.

In a statement released on Sunday morning, the Federation announced a nationwide academic strike starting tomorrow (Monday).

Federation President Laxmi Kishor Subedi and General Secretary Tula Bahadur Thapa called on teachers and education staff across the country to make the strike a success by halting all activities, including the publication of results.

The Federation, which has been protesting to demand various reforms from the government, has focused its street protests in Kathmandu since last week.

The strike aims to pressure the government to enact a quality school education system and a school education act that is friendly to both students and teachers.

“We now urge all teachers and staff to close schools nationwide and participate in the educational movement in Kathmandu,” the statement read.

“During this period, we request all educational stakeholders, including students, parents, school management committees, and others, to refrain from activities such as checking answer sheets, publishing results, conducting training seminars, or organizing educational tours, and to show solidarity with this movement.”
