EC calls on parties to apply for PR seats as election timeline begins

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has called on political parties wishing to participate under the Proportional Representation (PR) system in the upcoming House of Representatives election to submit their applications within the stipulated timeframe.

Issuing a notice on Thursday, the EC said the PR-related electoral program will begin on Saturday. Parties intending to contest under the PR system must file their applications between December 7 at 10:00 am and December 9 at 4:00 pm, as per the approved schedule.

The commission has already set up the office of the Election Officer for the PR process at its Kantipath premises. EC Secretary Mahadev Pantha has been appointed as the Election Officer for the PR category.

According to the EC, the list of parties submitting applications will be published on December 10. Parties registered under the PR system must then submit their closed list of candidates on December 28 and 29 between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm.

With 90 days remaining before the country heads to polls on March 5, the commission has also laid out the schedule for the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) process. As per the program, FPTP candidates will file their nominations on January 20, with the preliminary list also being published the same day.

Complaints against candidacies can be filed on January 21 (Magh 7), while the revised list will be published on January 22. Candidates may withdraw their names on January 23, after which the final list will be made public and election symbols will be allotted.

The EC is also making preparations for the National Assembly election scheduled for January 25.
