PM Karki reaffirms election will proceed in March 5, 2026
Prime Minister (PM) Sushila Karki has reaffirmed her commitment to holding the House of Representatives election on March 5, 2026 in a peaceful and fear-free environment. Addressing an all-party meeting held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar on Friday, she emphasized that the election date would not be postponed, stating that the Election Commission, security agencies, and all state bodies involved in the process are fully prepared. “Let us not think about whether the election will happen or not; let us think about how to make it successful,” she said. “If all 126 parties are united in their resolve, no one can disrupt the election. Bad elements cannot attack when the people—who are the first line of security—stand firm, supported by the police, armed forces, and former security personnel.”
Yadav appointed Madhesh Chief Minister
Krishna Prasad Yadav has been appointed Chief Minister of Madhesh Province. On Friday, Madhesh Province Chief Dr. Surendra Lav Karna appointed Yadav, the leader of the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party in Madhesh, to the post. Earlier in the day, seven parties submitted their claim to the Province Chief along with letters of support from 77 Provincial Assembly members, recommending Yadav as Chief Minister. Yadav has secured support from the Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, Janamat Party, CPN (Maoist Centre), Loktantrik Samajwadi Party, and CPN (Unified Socialist).
Preparations for HoR election in full swing
With only 90 days remaining until the election of members to the House of Representatives, scheduled for March 5, 2026, preparations are moving ahead at full speed. The Election Commission (EC) has intensified its efforts, and political parties are also ramping up their internal activities with the election in focus. The Commission will begin implementing the proportional electoral system program starting this Saturday. According to the schedule, political parties must submit their applications for the proportional electoral system between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm on December 7. The list of parties that apply will be published on December 10.
Oli and Deuba meet for first time since the Gen-Z protest
For the first time since the Gen-Z protest, CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba met on Friday for political discussions in Maharajgunj. Oli arrived at Deuba’s temporary residence, where Acting NC President Purna Bahadur Khadka was already in discussions with party leaders. According to sources, Friday’s meeting marks the first direct engagement between the two top leaders following the serious attack on Deuba during the Gen-Z protest.
Lumbini Lions reaches playoffs; defending champion Janakpur Bolts eliminated from league stage
Lumbini Lions have secured a spot in the playoffs of the Nepal Premier League (NPL), while defending champions Janakpur Bolts were eliminated from the league stage following Friday’s 25th match of the tournament. Lumbini defeated Janakpur by four wickets at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, chasing down a target of 133 runs in 19 overs while losing six wickets. Captain Rohit Poudel top-scored for Lumbini with 34 runs off 32 balls, including two fours and a six. Darcy Short contributed 30 runs off 24 balls, while JJ Smith added 21 runs off 19 balls.
Kulman Ghising says he is preparing to lead the nation, seeks support for Ujyalo Nepal Party
Minister Kulman Ghising, who serves in the Sushila Karki-led interim government, has said he is preparing to take on the leadership of the country. Speaking at the inauguration of a basic-level hospital in Sunapati Rural Municipality of Ramechhap, Ghising, who currently oversees three ministries including Energy, remarked that he is ready to assume national leadership. Ghising said he registered the Ujyalo Nepal Party with the vision of building a better Nepal and appealed for public support. “To truly brighten the country, someone like me must reach the leadership,” he said, urging people to support his party in the upcoming elections. He argued that the next government will have a heavy workload and claimed he is the right person to lead it. “To institutionalize change, we need elections, and we must choose capable individuals,” he said.
Nepal stresses need for financial and integrated support for LDCs at Doha meeting
Nepal has underscored that the transition of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) into developing nations should be a proud milestone leading toward a prosperous and sustainable future. It also emphasized the need for adequate financial and integrated support for LDCs during this transition phase. Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai, in his capacity as the Chair of the LDC Group, highlighted these concerns during a high-level discussion held on Thursday as part of the meeting on “Building Global Partnerships for Sustainable Development of LDCs” in Doha. The event was organized by the UN Office of the High Representative for LDCs, LLDCs, and SIDS, along with the Qatar Fund.
RPP’s Gyanendra Shahi accuses govt of disregarding Gen-Z mandate
Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) leader Gyanendra Shahi has accused the current government of moving ahead against the core mandate of the Gen-Z movement. Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu on Friday, Shahi said the Gen-Z protests demanded good governance, action against corruption, and a directly elected executive prime minister, yet the government’s focus has remained solely on holding elections. He reminded the coalition that the government was not formed only to conduct the 2027 election earlier in 2026. Shahi criticized the government for failing to restore peace, good governance and order even after the heavy loss of lives and property during the Gen-Z uprising. He remarked that the youth involved in the movement feel betrayed by the government.
Kanchan Bichha loses Assembly seat after RPP expulsion for party betrayal
Madhesh Province’s proportional representation (women category) lawmaker Kanchan Bichha has been removed from her position after the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) expelled her for violating party discipline. RPP had expelled Bichha from the party’s general membership for six months, accusing her of working against party policy and breaching organizational discipline. Following the party’s decision, the RPP Central Executive Committee submitted a letter to the Province Assembly Secretariat requesting the withdrawal of her Assembly membership. The Secretariat confirmed that the request has been formally registered.
Thapa backs Oli’s continued leadership, calls it a national necessity
CPN-UML Vice-Chair Ram Bahadur Thapa has alleged that regressive forces are attempting to weaken the leadership of democratic political parties to push their counter-revolutionary agenda. Speaking at an interaction program organized by Press Chautari Nepal on Friday, Thapa said that UML’s upcoming 11th General Convention is “not an ordinary convention but a decisive political moment against counter-revolution.” He claimed that certain forces, motivated by the belief that counter-revolution succeeds only by weakening party leadership, are trying to displace legitimate leadership within political parties.
“Attempts are underway to remove party leadership. Reactionary elements believe their success depends on replacing existing leadership,” he said.
Gold and silver prices fall slightly
The prices of gold and silver declined slightly today compared to Thursday. According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Traders’ Federation, the price of one tola of gold has been set at Rs 252,400, while silver is priced at Rs 3,555 per tola. On Thursday, gold was traded at Rs 253,300 per tola, and silver at Rs 3,625 per tola. International media reports that one ounce of gold is currently being traded at US$ 4,240, while one ounce of silver is trading at US$ 58 in the global market.
EC calls on parties to apply for PR seats as election timeline begins
The Election Commission (EC) has called on political parties wishing to participate under the Proportional Representation (PR) system in the upcoming House of Representatives election to submit their applications within the stipulated timeframe. Issuing a notice, the EC said the PR-related electoral program will begin on Saturday. Parties intending to contest under the PR system must file their applications between December 7 at 10:00 am and December 9 at 4:00 pm, as per the approved schedule. The commission has already set up the office of the Election Officer for the PR process at its Kantipath premises. EC Secretary Mahadev Pantha has been appointed as the Election Officer for the PR category.
No applicants for VC post at Dasharath Chand Health Sciences University even after two calls
The Vice-Chancellor (VC) position at the newly formed Sahid Dasharath Chand University of Health Sciences has failed to attract a single applicant despite two vacancy announcements. The recommendation committee formed for the VC appointment had first issued a notice from November 2 to 16. The deadline was later extended until November 21. However, no applications were received even by the extended deadline, officials said. In response, Minister for Education, Science, and Technology Mahabir Pun made a public call on Friday, urging eligible Nepali professionals to come forward.
Minister Gupta vows to advance youth-focused agendas, stresses road safety awareness
Minister for Youth and Sports Bablu Gupta has said that he will push youth-related agendas more effectively, emphasizing that the concerns of young people fall directly under his ministry’s mandate. Speaking at a program jointly organized by the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office and the National Youth Council on the occasion of International Volunteer Day 2025, Minister Gupta highlighted the importance of placing youths at the center of national policy efforts. Gupta pledged that despite limited resources, the ministry will extend necessary support to minimize road accidents. He stressed the need for both the public and traffic police to foster a positive attitude toward each other, saying that stronger mutual understanding would help reduce accidents significantly.
International Volunteer Day, and World Soil Day marked today
International Volunteer Day was observed today across almost all UN member states. World Soil Day was also celebrated today. Both occasions are marked globally at the call of the United Nations. International Volunteer Day was launched in 1985 with the aim of honoring the contributions of volunteers and promoting the spirit of volunteerism and service from the local to the international level. That same year, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared December 5 as the International Day of Volunteers.
KMC starts lifestyle survey
Kathmandu Metropolitan City (LMC) has begun a survey to assess the nutritional status, dietary habits, and lifestyle of its public representatives and employees. The Agriculture and Livestock Department of KMC launched the program on December 2. The survey will continue until December 12. Employees will participate until December 7, both employees and public representatives on December 8, and public representatives on December 9, 10, and 11. According to Department Chief Nurnidhi Neupane, an additional session has been scheduled for December 12 for those who miss their allocated dates.
Hetauda Road Division to begin clearing encroachments along major highways from Dec 5
The Hetauda Road Division has announced that it will begin road protection and clearance work along key highway sections in Hetauda from December 6. Issuing a notice on Friday, the division said it will start clearing encroachments along the Mahendra Highway, from Ratomate (Hetauda-15) through Buddhachowk up to Rapti Bridge, and along the Tribhuvan Highway from Buddhachowk to Samari Bridge. The Division had already published a notice in Gorkhapatra on November 21, informing the public about the need to vacate road boundaries. It has now moved forward with formally commencing the road protection drive.
Solar energy projects attract growing investment interest
Interest in solar energy investment is on the rise as part of Nepal’s energy mix strategy. The trend comes as hydropower projects generate abundant electricity during the rainy season but produce less during the winter months, highlighting the need for alternative energy sources. So far, 97 solar energy projects with a combined capacity of 2,104 megawatts have obtained survey permits from the Department of Power Development under the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation.
Mini-truck driver killed in accident in Baitadi
The driver of a mini-truck died in an accident at Kathegaund in Surnaya Rural Municipality-5 last night. According to Police Inspector Baldev Badu of the District Police Office, 29-year-old Naresh Mahara, a resident of Surnaya Rural Municipality-4, died on the spot. Mahara was driving from Sanseri Madau in Surnaya-4 towards Dhangadhi when the accident occurred.
Sayapatri Homestay launched in Beni’s Toripani
The Sayapatri Community Homestay has officially begun operations in Toripani, Beni Municipality–9. The homestay, launched across five households, can accommodate up to 21 guests per day. Homestay services have been established in the homes of Juna Khatri, Rashmi Chokhal, Sujana Chokhal, Yuva Giri, and Jamuna Shrestha, according to group chairperson Sita Khatri. “We have started the homestay with the aim of offering visitors a family-like environment,” Khatri said. “As tourism grows, we plan to expand the service to more households.”
Milk production increases in Tanahun
Milk production has increased in Tanahun as farmers’ interest in animal husbandry continues to grow. According to the district’s Livestock Service Office, farmers have been increasingly attracted to livestock farming due to subsidy programs introduced by local governments, veterinary hospitals, and animal service expert centers. Office Chief Robinson Adhikari reported that 74,755 metric tons of milk were produced in the district in fiscal year 2024/25. In the previous fiscal year 2023/24, production stood at 73,572 metric tons, indicating an increase of 1,182 metric tons.
