Commission interrogates Rabi Lamichhane for over six hours

KATHMANDU: The probe commission led by former justice Gauri Bahadur Karki interrogated Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) chair Rabi Lamichhane for more than six hours on Wednesday.

Lamichhane, who is currently in Nakkhu Prison on cooperative fraud charges, was brought to Singha Durbar for questioning. The commission, formed to investigate the incidents of September 8 and 9, recorded his statement throughout the day.

During the Gen-Z movement, RSP leaders and supporters had reportedly taken Lamichhane out of prison, after which several other inmates from different prisons also escaped.

The commission questioned him about the letter made public when he left jail, as well as how and why he was released.

Lamichhane’s release had sparked widespread criticism, prompting him to return to prison voluntarily after the prison administration issued a notice for escaped inmates to surrender.

He remains in custody pending trial in connection with cooperative fraud and money laundering charges. While he was released on bail in other cases, the court had ordered him to remain in judicial custody in the Supreme Cooperative fraud case in Butwal.

He was later transferred from Rupandehi Prison to Nakkhu Prison upon his own request. Lamichhane continues to maintain that he is innocent of all allegations.
