KATHMANDU: CPN-UML central committee member Pasang Sherpa has been sent to jail to serve his sentence in a polygamy case.
Sherpa, who had been convicted by both the District Court and the High Court a year ago, was arrested by a team from the Kathmandu Police Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
According to SP Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, spokesperson for the Kathmandu Police Complex, Sherpa was presented before the court on Wednesday and sent to Dilli Bazaar Prison to serve his sentence.
Originally from Taplejung, Sherpa had recently been residing in Gundu, Bhaktapur, and was reportedly involved in the security detail of UML Chair KP Sharma Oli. He also served as the chairperson of the party’s Janajati Federation.
Sherpa was convicted by the Patan High Court last year in a polygamy case filed by his wife, Karishma Kharel, at the Kathmandu District Court. The court had sentenced him to one year in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000.
Despite the verdict, Sherpa had remained outside custody for months under political protection until his arrest from Dhumbarahi on Tuesday evening.
