450 houses submerged in Jhapa floods

JHAPA: At least 450 houses have been submerged in Jhapa district due to flooding triggered by continuous rainfall.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Khagendra Bahadur Khadka, spokesperson for the District Police Office, reported that floodwaters have entered multiple settlements across the district.

“Rescue operations are underway with the support of Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and local residents,” he said. “We have already relocated residents from around 100 houses.”

The East-West Highway has been blocked due to rising water levels in the Kalikhola stream at Mechinagar Municipality-6. Similarly, traffic has been disrupted in Shivasatakshi Municipality-10 after floodwaters from the Sukuna Khola washed away a hosepipe. DSP Khadka stated that efforts are ongoing to clear the road.

In Sugabathan, Jhapa Rural Municipality-2, 140 people from 56 households were displaced after the Maikhola River flooded their settlement. They have been rescued and relocated to Kuwadi Secondary School.

In Shivasatakshi Wards 4, 5, 6, and 7, around 350 houses have been submerged by the Mai Khola floods, and rescue efforts are still in progress. The Mai Khola floodwaters have also entered Wards 1, 6, and 7 of Jhapa Rural Municipality.

In Bhadrapur Municipality-5, about 25 houses have been submerged, and the affected residents are currently staying with relatives. Likewise, approximately 25 homes in Mechinagar-15, located between Satighatta and Jyamirgadhi, are at risk after the settlement was inundated.
