Landslide in Ilam kills 11 people



KATHMANDU: At least 11 people have been confirmed dead following multiple landslides in Ilam district on Saturday night.

According to Chief District Officer Sunita Nepal, two houses were buried by landslides in various locations, including Ilam Municipality-6 and Maijogmai Rural Municipality. Search and rescue efforts are underway to locate the missing and assist the injured.

Rescue operations began early Sunday morning, but challenging terrain and ongoing rain have hampered efforts. A helicopter has been requested from Itahari to assist in rescue operations in Mangsebung Rural Municipality-1, where access has become extremely difficult.

Police confirmed that five people died in a single house in Ghos, Ilam Municipality-5. In Chhange, Sandakpur Rural Municipality-1, one person died and another was seriously injured.

Five individuals from the same household have gone missing in Pyang, Maijogmai Rural Municipality-6, while a girl has been reported missing after her house was swept away in Sulubung, Sandakpur Rural Municipality-3.

In Mangsebung Rural Municipality-1, a pregnant woman and a man have sustained serious injuries. In another incident in Phakphokthum-3, one person died after being buried in a landslide in Ratmate, Aamchowk.

Authorities say further details are still being collected as rescue operations continue.
