Water flow in Koshi Barrage exceeds 335,000 cusecs

50 out of 56 gates opened

SUNSARI: The water level in the Koshi Barrage has crossed the alert mark, prompting authorities to open 50 out of its 56 sluice gates.

As per the latest measurement taken on Sunday morning, the flow through the barrage reached 335,360 cusecs per hour. Security officials have described this volume as an indicator of extreme danger.

Sunsari Superintendent of Police Keshav Kumar Thebe informed that vehicular movement across the barrage bridge has not been halted yet. However, with the water level still rising, there is a possibility that the bridge may need to be closed if the situation worsens.

With the Saptakoshi River surpassing the alert level, residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to remain vigilant. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a warning, advising people to take precautions against potential flooding and inundation.

“The flow in Saptakoshi at Chatra has crossed the alert level,” the department said in a notice. “With heavy rain ongoing and expected to continue until this evening, water levels in the Koshi River are increasing. Residents in flood-prone areas are requested to remain on high alert through the evening.”
