Monsoon disaster: Death toll reaches 52
The death toll from monsoon-related disasters across Nepal has risen to 52, as relentless rainfall over the past two days has unleashed floods, landslides, lightning strikes, and road accidents in multiple regions. According to the Armed Police Force Headquarters, an additional seven people remain missing, while 29 others have sustained injuries. Koshi Province has borne the brunt of the devastation, with Ilam district alone accounting for 37 deaths due to landslides and flooding. Other districts in the province have reported 12 more fatalities, bringing Koshi’s total to 49 deaths. In Madhes Province, three people died and one was injured in Rautahat after being struck by lightning. Another person is still missing in Bara district. Bagmati Province reported four injuries and four people missing, while Sudurpaschim Province confirmed eight people injured in weather-related incidents.
Landslide in Ilam: 37 dead, four missing
A total of 37 people have been confirmed dead in landslides triggered by continuous rainfall across various municipalities of Ilam district. As of Sunday afternoon, some people are still reported missing. According to Chief District Officer Sunita Nepal, post-mortem examinations have been completed for 11 of the deceased. The District Administration Office stated that detailed assessments of the damage are still underway. The fatalities include people in Suryodaya Municipality-1 Manebhanjyang, Ilam Municipality-6 Ghosh, Sandakpur Rural Municipality, Mangsebung Rural Municipality, Deumai Municipality, Maijogmai Rural Municipality, and Phakphokthum Rural Municipality.
BP Highway to reopen within 3–4 days: Minister Ghising
The government has stated that efforts are underway to reopen the BP Highway, which has been blocked due to continuous rainfall. Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and Urban Development, Kulman Ghising, said that the Bhakundebesi–Nepalthok section of the BP Highway will be brought back into operation as soon as possible. Speaking at a press conference organized by the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure, Minister Ghising stated that the highway is expected to reopen within three to four days.
Govt to provide Rs 2 lakh immediate relief to families of disaster victims
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has directed District Administration Offices to provide immediate financial relief of Rs 2 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives in recent floods and landslides. Additionally, the Authority has instructed that injured individuals receive free medical treatment in coordination with local authorities. Executive Chief of the Authority, Dinesh Prasad Bhatta, stated that District Administration Offices in the affected areas have been directed to carry out immediate rescue and relief efforts.
Heavy rains disrupt road network across the country
Most of the main highways leading into Kathmandu Valley were obstructed. Key routes including the Koshi Highway, Prithivi Highway, BP Highway, Araniko Highway, Siddhicharan Lokmarg, Kulekhani, and Pasang Lhamu roads were completely impassable. The Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed that efforts were underway to safely relocate stranded passengers and vehicles from the affected highways. Continuous heavy rainfall since Friday night disrupted daily life across Nepal, spreading nationwide by Saturday morning. The persistent downpour has caused widespread interruptions to transportation and other essential activities.
Rain-causing low-pressure system exits Nepal
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has announced that the low-pressure system responsible for the recent heavy rainfall has exited Nepal. In a statement issued on Sunday, Department spokesperson Bibhuti Pokharel confirmed that weather conditions have improved following the weakening of the monsoon system. However, the department clarified that the monsoon has not yet fully withdrawn from the country, meaning rainfall is still possible—though not as intense or continuous as experienced on October 4.
All 56 gates of Koshi Barrage opened
All 56 gates of the Koshi Barrage have been opened following a sharp rise in the water level of the Saptakoshi River due to continuous rainfall. According to Chief District Officer of Sunsari, Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, 50 gates had already been opened by 8:00 AM after the river’s flow reached 330,060 cubic feet per second. By 8:15 AM, as the water flow surged past 335,360 cubic feet per second, all 56 gates were opened to manage the pressure. Authorities are conducting continuous monitoring of the river’s water level. A red warning light has been activated at the Koshi Barrage, and red flags have been placed as indicators of high flood risk.
Road caves in at Aanbukhaireni on Prithvi Highway
A section of the road has caved in at Aanbukhaireni Rural Municipality-4 in Tanahun district along the Prithvi Highway. Following the incident, the Aanbukhaireni–Muglin road is being operated as a one-way route. According to Police Inspector Tek Prasad Subedi of the Area Police Office in Aanbukhaireni, the road caved in around 4 p.m. on Saturday due to continuous rainfall. He said that police have been deployed on both sides of the affected section to manage the safe one-way movement of vehicles. However, he has urged motorists to avoid nighttime travel through the area, citing safety concerns.
Girl dies after being swept away by river in Udayapur
A three-year-old girl has died after being swept away by the Ambika River in Triyuga Municipality-5, Damauti of Udayapur district. According to the District Police Office, Udayapur, the victim has been identified as Rebika Rai, daughter of Ujan Rai. She was playing near the river around 2 p.m. on Saturday when the incident occurred. Deputy Superintendent of Police Kedarman Dong, the Information Officer at the District Police Office, said the child’s body has been handed over to her family after completion of the necessary procedures.
Saptakoshi River flow exceeds alert level
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology issued a warning urging residents in flood-prone areas near the Saptakoshi River in Chatara, Sunsari, to remain extremely cautious, as the river has crossed the alert level. In a notice issued today morning, the Department stated that due to ongoing heavy rainfall, the water level in the Koshi River continues to rise and is expected to remain high throughout the day. “The water flow in the Saptakoshi at Chatara has exceeded the alert level. As heavy rainfall is ongoing and expected to continue until this evening, residents in flood- and inundation-prone areas are advised to maintain a high level of alertness,” the notice read.
Fugitive in fake Bhutanese refugee case arrested
Sandesh Sharma, a fugitive defendant in the fake Bhutanese refugee case, has been arrested by a team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office. Originally from Tulsipur Sub-Metropolitan City-16 in Dang, Sharma was apprehended in Lalitpur and has been sent back to prison, according to Superintendent of Police Kaji Kumar Acharya, spokesperson for the Crime Investigation Office. Sharma had escaped from Nakkhu Prison during the jailbreak that occurred amid the Gen-Z movement on September 8–9 and had been on the run since.
UML postpones Sunday’s Secretariat meeting
Citing the ongoing impact of heavy rains, floods, and landslides across the country, the CPN-UML has postponed its 58th Secretariat meeting, which was originally scheduled for Sunday. The meeting will now be held next Friday, according to Dr. Bhishma Adhikari, Secretary of the UML Central Office. Dr. Adhikari stated that the decision was made in view of the current disaster situation affecting several regions. The UML Central Committee meeting remains scheduled to take place in Kathmandu from October 13 to 15.
Eight major rivers exceed danger levels; 12 rivers above alert mark
Incessant rainfall has pushed eight major rivers across Nepal above the danger level, according to the latest update from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. Flood monitoring stations show that water levels in the Bagmati, Sun Koshi, Arun, Tamor, Koshi, Budhikhola (Sunsari), and Biring Khola (Jhapa) rivers have exceeded critical thresholds. Binod Parajuli, Chief of the Flood Forecasting Division, said that an additional 12 river stations have reported water levels above the alert mark. He noted that river levels are still rising in Koshi Province, while they are either stable or gradually decreasing in Bagmati and some parts of Madhesh Province.
Domestic flights resume from Tribhuvan Int’l Airport
Domestic flights, which were suspended due to continuous rainfall, have resumed this morning from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). According to TIA, flights have restarted on routes where weather conditions have improved. This morning, flights from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and Bhadrapur have already taken off. The TIA also confirmed that weather conditions in Pokhara and Surkhet have now become favorable for air travel, allowing operations to resume on those routes as well. Meanwhile, international flights have been operating regularly since last evening.
Homestays in Parbat await tourists amid monsoon disruptions
Homestays in rural areas of Parbat district have fallen quiet as continuous rainfall and blocked roads disrupt tourist movement during the monsoon season. More than 60 homestay services operate across the district. However, since July, the number of visitors has sharply declined due to persistent rains, and the situation has worsened further during the recent Gen-Z protests. While homestay operators are ready to welcome guests, many are doubtful about the immediate return of tourism activity.
Landslide disrupts traffic in western Myagdi
A landslide at Phaparkhet, on the border of Beni Municipality-4 and Mangala Rural Municipality-2, has disrupted traffic along the Beni–Darwang road. This vital route connects three rural municipalities in Myagdi with the district headquarters, Beni Bazaar. Since the road was opened before 2060 BS, it has remained vulnerable to landslides during every monsoon season, regularly halting transportation along the 24-kilometer stretch. The Beni–Darwang road is a critical link for residents of Mangala, Malika, and Dhaulagiri rural municipalities, and is also used by people from Tamankhola Rural Municipality in neighboring Baglung district.
Energy, irrigation systems suffer millions in losses from floods
The floods triggered by heavy rains on October 3 and 4 have caused significant damage to energy, water resources, and irrigation infrastructure across the country, with preliminary losses estimated in the millions of rupees, according to the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation. Minister Kulman Ghising said damage to around 1,500 meters of embankment alone is estimated at Rs 100 million.
450 houses submerged in Jhapa floods
At least 450 houses have been submerged in Jhapa district due to flooding triggered by continuous rainfall. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Khagendra Bahadur Khadka, spokesperson for the District Police Office, reported that floodwaters have entered multiple settlements across the district. “Rescue operations are underway with the support of Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and local residents,” he said. “We have already relocated residents from around 100 houses.”
Three of four missing in Rasuwa are from the same family
Of the four individuals who went missing after being swept away by a stream in Gosainkunda Rural Municipality-4, Rasuwa, three are from the same family. The incident occurred on Saturday while the group was en route to Langtang when a local stream suddenly swept them away. The missing individuals have been identified as Rabi Shrestha (23) of Bhaktapur Municipality-10, and Sanskriti Shrestha (23), Kishan Shrestha (21), and Sanita Shrestha (26) of Suryabinayak Municipality-4. According to Lachchhu Ram Neupane, Chairperson of Suryabinayak-4, Sanskriti, Kishan, and Sanita are members of the same family, originally from Ramechhap and now residing in Dadhikot. All four remain missing as of this morning.
Women’s T20I Series: Nepal defeated by Malaysia
Nepal suffered a 13-run defeat against Malaysia in the third match of the Women’s T20 International Series held in Kuala Lumpur today. With this loss, Malaysia has taken a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Earlier, Nepal lost the first match by three runs but bounced back to win the second match by six wickets. In today’s game, chasing a target of 121 runs set by Malaysia, Nepal was restricted to 107 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs.
Two people, including woman in labor, rescued by Nepali Army
The Nepali Army today rescued two individuals, including a woman in labor, who were seriously injured in a landslide in Patigaun, Mangsebung Rural Municipality-1, Ilam. They were airlifted by an army helicopter and transported to the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan for treatment, according to the Army Public Relations and Information Directorate. The Army also reported that security personnel have been mobilized from 21 battalion headquarters and subordinate units in response to the landslide damage across Mangsebung Rural Municipality, Ilam Municipality, and the Manebhanjyang area.
23-member Nepal National Men’s Football Team announced
A 23-member Nepal National Men’s Football Team, led by captain Kiran Kumar Limbu, has been officially announced. Chief Coach Matt Ross unveiled the squad today for the upcoming AFC Asia Cup 2027 qualification matches against Vietnam. The team includes: Avishek Limbu, Ananta Tamang, Anjan Bista, Erik Bista, Ayush Ghalan, Bimal Pandey, Bishal Sunar, Dip Karki, Dinesh Henjan, Gillespye Jung Karki, Kritik Ratna Chhunju, Kushal Deuba, Lekan Limbu, Manu Kumar Lama, Manish Dangi, Rohit Chand, Rohan Karki, Sanish Shrestha, Subas Thakuri Bam, Sumit Shrestha, Suman Shrestha, and Yogesh Gurung. Nepal Airlines Bhairahawa flight rescheduled to 1 PM on Monday
Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) has rescheduled its Bhairahawa flight, which will now operate at 1 PM on Monday, October 6. Following road blockages caused by landslides during the Dashain holidays, the government had instructed the national flag carrier to operate special flights to rescue passengers stranded in Bhairahawa. However, due to operational constraints—primarily the grounding of two aircraft—the flight can only be conducted in the early afternoon.“The Kathmandu-Bhairahawa-Kathmandu flight will be operated by a narrow-body aircraft, departing Kathmandu at 1 PM,” said Subash Dangi, spokesperson for Nepal Airlines Corporation. The flight had originally been approved to operate on Sunday, but the schedule was revised due to logistical issues.
Indian PM Modi expresses grief over losses caused by floods and landslides in Nepal
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and property caused by recent floods and landslides in Nepal following heavy rainfall. “The loss of life and damage caused by heavy rains in Nepal is distressing. We stand with the people and the Government of Nepal during this difficult time. As a friendly neighbour and first responder, India remains committed to providing any assistance that may be needed,” PM Modi wrote on his official social media platform X.
Health Ministry warns of disease risk after floods and landslides
The Ministry of Health and Population has urged the public to remain cautious about the potential spread of waterborne and vector-borne diseases in the aftermath of recent floods and landslides across Nepal. Ministry spokesperson Dr. Prakash Budhathoki warned that while immediate concerns during disasters are usually physical injuries and infrastructure damage, illnesses like diarrhea, cholera, dengue, and malaria often surface later.
