Flood risk in six major rivers till Wednesday

KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a warning of potential flooding in six major rivers across Nepal, urging high vigilance until Wednesday.

According to the department, rivers such as the East Rapti, Bagmati, Mahakali, Karnali, Bheri, and the western Seti are expected to experience rising water levels.

Binod Parajuli, a flood expert at the department, reported that although the Babai River crossed the danger level around midday today, the water level began to recede by 3 PM. “The warning level for the Babai River is 5.5 meters and the danger level is 6.8 meters. Today, the river reached 7.1 meters at midday but has since decreased to 6.62 meters,” Parajuli said.

He added that smaller rivers in districts such as Kavrepalanchok, Makwanpur, Dang, Banke, Chitwan, Kailali, Kanchanpur, and surrounding areas are also likely to swell significantly, posing a high risk of flash floods. Residents in these areas are advised to exercise extreme caution.

Parajuli confirmed that early warning alerts are being disseminated in the high-risk areas to prepare communities in advance.
