Govt committed to strengthening private sector role in solar energy: Minister Khadka

KATHMANDU: Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Deepak Khadka has said the government is working to make private sector investment and partnership more effective in order to achieve long-term sustainable energy development in Nepal.

Speaking at a program in Kathmandu on Tuesday organized to mark the silver jubilee of the Nepal Solar Power Producers’ Association, Minister Khadka acknowledged the significant role the association has played in bringing electricity to remote parts of the country where the government has yet to extend power supply. He praised the association’s efforts in lighting up villages that remain off the national grid.

Minister Khadka stated that the association’s continued partnership will be crucial in achieving the government’s ten-year sustainable energy target. He emphasized that solar energy has now emerged as a strategically important alternative for clean and reliable power, especially in the context of Nepal’s renewable energy ambitions.

The minister further informed that the government has prioritized policies to encourage investment in the solar energy sector. He said efforts are underway to review the current solar power purchase rate, improve access to transmission infrastructure, and strengthen banking mechanisms to support investment in solar projects.

Khadka reiterated that a strong and supportive role from the private sector is indispensable for Nepal to meet its clean energy goals and ensure equitable energy access across the country.
