Three arrested on charges of abetment to suicide after teen found dead

KANCHANPUR: Police have arrested three individuals, including the husband, in connection with the death of a 17-year-old girl who died by suicide at her residence in Kanchanpur district.

The deceased, Samjhana Bhatta of Beldandi Rural Municipality-2, was found dead in her bedroom on Sunday. Acting on a complaint filed by her family, police arrested her husband, 24-year-old Pawan Bhatta, along with his parents Haridatta Bhatta and Kiran Bhatta.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sagar Bohara of the District Police Office, all three have been taken into custody for investigation under the charge of abetment to suicide. DSP Bohara said police obtained a five-day remand from the court to hold Pawan Bhatta in custody, with investigations ongoing into the roles of his parents.

Samjhana’s maternal family has alleged that she was a victim of domestic violence and dowry-related abuse, which they claim drove her to suicide. They also accused the in-laws of subjecting her to mental torture over the past few months.

Samjhana and Pawan had married six months.

Local authorities confirmed that the couple had a dispute on Saturday, the day before her death, and had visited the Beldandi Area Police Office to report the matter. Officers said they mediated the conflict and sent the couple home after a reconciliation attempt. Samjhana was found dead the next day.

Her body has been sent to Mahakali Provincial Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Police say further action will be taken based on the autopsy report and ongoing investigation.
