Tourist influx rises in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve

SUNSARI: The number of domestic and international tourists visiting the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, renowned for its deer and bird species, has seen a notable increase.

Compared to the previous fiscal year, tourist arrivals have grown in the current fiscal year. From mid-July (Shrawan) to mid-April (Chaitra), a total of 8,415 Nepali tourists, 66 visitors from SAARC nations, and 210 other foreign nationals toured the reserve, according to Bhupendra Saad Yadav, a conservation officer at the reserve.

The influx of tourists has generated Rs 2.519 million in revenue, Yadav added. Senior conservation officer Bhupendra Prasad Yadav noted that the rise in tourist numbers has been especially significant since the start of the winter season.

The reserve administration said that visitors are drawn to Kosi Tappu to witness Nepal’s rare native deer species, observe newborn rhinos, and watch migratory birds that travel from Siberia and beyond. The reserve is home to 520 different bird species.

In an effort to boost tourism further, the Koshi Province government has initiated several promotional campaigns aimed at attracting visitors from neighboring India.

Most recently, a sticker campaign was launched near Bhantabari in Kosi Rural Municipality-8, close to the Nepal–India border. The initiative is intended to ensure that Indian vehicles and tourists can travel within the province without facing any hassles.
