KATHMANDU: The Maoist Centre, the main opposition party, has unveiled plans to prioritize broader leftist unity to strengthen its position.
During the Central Committee meeting that began on Sunday, party chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ announced efforts to unite with several leftist forces in Nepal.
Dahal proposed initiating unification with the Nepal Communist Party, led by Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav’, Unified Socialist, led by Madhav Kumar Nepal, CPN led by Dharmendra Bastola; Aam Janata Party, led by Prabhu Sah; and the Nepal Sajambadi Party led by Mahendra Raya Yadav.
This plan was presented as part of his political and organizational report titled “Commitment to Party Transformation and Reconstruction: Today’s Necessity.”
Dahal also announced the launch of a Tarai-Madhesh Awareness Campaign starting February 14 for one month. This campaign will center around the Postal Highway.
He emphasized the need for all office bearers, including himself, to actively participate in these efforts to bring the party closer to the people.
Expressing concerns over the party’s large Central Committee, Dahal highlighted that while it presents challenges, it also offers opportunities. Following the meeting, party vice-chairperson and spokesperson Agni Prasad Sapkota provided further insights into these initiatives.
According to Dahal, the Maoist party is currently navigating a critical and challenging phase in its history.
The transition from a revolutionary image to the practice of multi-party democracy presents significant hurdles in maintaining its ideological identity. However, the efforts for broader leftist unification aim to address these challenges and reinvigorate the party.
