NC bars sitting National Assembly, Provincial Assembly members from candidacy in upcoming polls

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress has decided not to nominate sitting members of the National Assembly and Provincial Assemblies as candidates in the upcoming National Assembly and House of Representatives elections.

The party’s central secretariat has clarified that those currently holding seats in the National Assembly or Provincial Assemblies will not be eligible for recommendation in the new round of candidacies.

Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel issued a circular on Wednesday, providing clarification on earlier instructions related to candidate recommendations. In the notice, party committees at all levels have been directed not to recommend individuals who are still serving in the National Assembly or Provincial Assemblies.

“The names of incumbent members of the National Assembly cannot be recommended as candidates,” the circular states. “Similarly, incumbent Provincial Assembly members cannot be recommended as candidates.”

With this decision, the Nepali Congress aims to prevent dual candidacies and ensure wider internal participation as the party prepares for the upcoming federal and provincial elections.
