Prachanda says broad left unity paving way for socialist revolution

KATHMANDU: Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Centre) Co-ordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said that the unification among leftist forces has created a favorable environment to move toward a socialist revolution.

Addressing the meeting of the Maoist Centre’s National Convention Organizing Committee at Pragya Bhawan in Kamaladi on Tuesday, Prachanda remarked that the recent Gen Z movement should be interpreted as a call for socialist transformation.

Expressing dissatisfaction over leader Janardan Sharma’s recent decision to launch a party restructuring campaign, Prachanda urged him to reconsider his move and rejoin the unification process. “Comrade Janardan, please review your decision and return to the party. We must move forward together,” he said.

Prachanda further stated that unity among republicans, democrats, and patriots was the need of the hour, calling on all progressive and nationalist forces to join the movement for change. He expressed confidence that other leftist and patriotic leaders would also participate in the unification process.

Senior leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha explained that the broad left unity aims to fulfill the national responsibilities of ensuring economic prosperity, good governance, and controlling corruption. He stressed that restructuring and polarization within the communist movement are essential and that bringing all patriotic forces together is now inevitable.

The meeting approved the party unification proposal. Party spokesperson Agni Prasad Sapkota said that a unified communist movement was necessary to achieve the goal of socialist revolution. He informed that an official unity announcement among nine left parties will be made on Wednesday at Bhrikuti Mandap.

According to Sapkota, the unified party will be named the Nepali Communist Party. The merger will include the Maoist Centre, CPN (Unified Socialist), Nepal Samajbadi Party, Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal, CPN (Maoist Socialist), CPN (Samyabadi), and other left factions.

The guiding principle of the new party will be Marxism–Leninism, while the political program will focus on scientific socialism with Nepali characteristics. The joint meeting of all participating central committees will finalize the party declaration, interim statute, and central leadership structure.

The new party has agreed to adopt a five-pointed star as its election symbol.
