Two separate proposals for Nepali Congress general convention; Mahendra Yadav challenges Gagan Thapa

KATHMANDU: Two separate proposals have been presented for the upcoming 15th General Convention of the Nepali Congress.

General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa proposed holding the convention from December 31, 2025 to January 3, 2026, while Joint General Secretary Mahendra Yadav suggested May 10 to 12, 2026 as the dates. Both submitted their detailed schedules during the Central Working Committee meeting held in Sanepa on Tuesday.

Thapa said although the convention should ideally be held in November-December, he proposed the December-January timeline as a “middle path” to achieve consensus. He also insisted that the general convention be completed before the March 5 elections.

Yadav, on the other hand, proposed that the party go for the 15th General Convention only after the March 5 elections.

Gagan Thapa’s proposed timeline:

  • By November 26: Renewal and distribution of active memberships
  • November 26–December 6: Membership verification
  • December 10: Handover to the Election Committee
  • December 13: Ward convention
  • December 20: Regional convention
  • December 31, 2025 to January 3, 2026: Central General Convention

Mahendra Yadav’s proposed timeline:

  • By December 6: Renewal of active memberships
  • By December 20: New membership distribution
  • By January 4, 2026: Handover to the Election Committee
  • March 15, 2026: Ward convention
  • March 19, 2026: Municipal convention
  • March 26, 2026: Provincial constituency convention
  • April 3, 2026: Federal constituency convention
  • April 13, 2026: District convention
  • April 28, 2026: Seven provincial conventions
  • May 10 to 12, 2026: Central General Convention
