Nicholas Bhusal arrested for inciting violence on social media

KATHMANDU: Police arrested self-proclaimed activist Nicholas Bhusal on Tuesday.

A team from the Valley Crime Investigation Office detained Bhusal from Saraswati Ashram in Gorkha Municipality–8, police confirmed. Authorities said he had been under surveillance for allegedly attempting to incite violence through social media posts.

Bhusal had recently drawn controversy after threatening to burn down the houses of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, calling them “killers” during a press conference held at Samvad Dabali last Saturday. He warned that his group would “take matters into their own hands” if the government failed to take action against them over the Gen-Z protest crackdown of September 8–9.

He had also made derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Sushila Karki, calling her incapable and accusing the government of protecting those responsible for the suppression of protesters.

Earlier, Bhusal was briefly detained at Maitighar on October 9 while attempting to organize a protest. A medical report later confirmed traces of cannabis use, after which police referred him to a rehabilitation center.

Bhusal’s arrest comes days after he publicly challenged the government to arrest him, reiterating his call for direct elections for an executive head on March 5. He had urged supporters to join a protest at Maitighar Mandala two days ago, but failed to appear himself.
