Govt instructs 11 ambassadors to return to Foreign Ministry

KATHMANDU: The government has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) to have Nepali ambassadors from 11 countries return to work at the Ministry itself.

This move comes after the Supreme Court, on Sunday, issued an interim order suspending the government’s earlier decision to recall ambassadors from 11 countries.

According to the Ministry, a formal letter from the government was received on Monday, directing that the ambassadors be called back to the Ministry.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Paudel Chhetri confirmed that the letter arrived on Monday, instructing the Ministry to summon all 11 ambassadors.

Earlier, a Cabinet meeting held on October 16 had decided to recall by November 6 those 11 ambassadors who had received political appointments.

However, a writ petition was subsequently filed at the Supreme Court, challenging the legality of that decision. Following the preliminary hearing on Sunday, the Court issued an interim order restraining the government from implementing the recall.
