PM Karki urges vigilance as rainfall increases flood and landslide risks

KATHMANDU: In a national address on Saturday evening, Prime Minister Sushila Karki called on citizens to remain highly alert as continuous rainfall has heightened the risk of floods, landslides, and inundation across the country.

Citing weather forecasts that predict heavy rain will persist for the next two days, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of public caution.

She warned that many rivers and streams have already reached alert levels and could overflow if the downpour continues.

“In these trying circumstances, I assure all citizens that the government is fully prepared to conduct rescue and relief efforts under any condition,” Karki said.

She stated that security forces—including Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Army—as well as health personnel and essential service providers, have been deployed around the clock to respond to emergencies.

The government, she added, is utilizing all available resources and working in close coordination with local authorities and communities to manage the situation.

Prime Minister Karki also mentioned that key highways and infrastructure are being closely monitored, and efforts are underway to restore transportation routes as soon as it is safe to do so.

Addressing the public directly, she urged everyone to prioritize safety: “Stay safe, and encourage others to do the same. Avoid unnecessary travel, and do not attempt to cross floodwaters or areas prone to landslides.”

She appealed to residents in high-risk zones to protect their lives and property by strictly following official instructions from police and disaster management agencies.

“Your safety is our top priority. The full support of the state is behind you. You are not alone,” she said.

Given the scale of the potential disaster, the Prime Minister also announced nationwide public holidays on October 5 and 6 to help minimize movement and risk during this period.
