Govt directs all district office chiefs to report to duty amid heavy rainfall risk

According to the ministry, the directive follows forecasts by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, which has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in several parts of the country between October 3 and 6.
Minister Ghising directs disaster preparedness amid heavy monsoon rains
Minister for Energy, Physical Infrastructure, Transport, and Urban Development Kulman Ghising has instructed authorities to remain on high alert for disaster response as heavy monsoon rains continue across the country. Speaking to reporters after a discussion with stakeholders at Singha Durbar on Saturday, Minister Ghising said multiple regions were facing heavy to very heavy rainfall, making immediate preparedness crucial.
Vehicle movement halted on Hetauda–Kathmandu routes amid flood, landslide risk
Authorities have suspended vehicle movement along the Hetauda–Kathmandu roads citing increased risks of floods and landslides due to continuous rainfall. According to Makwanpur District Police spokesperson Pushkar Bogati, the decision was made following the directive of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.
All state resources will be used to protect citizens from risks: PM Karki
Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said that all state resources will be mobilized to protect citizens during the ongoing disaster. In a video address to the nation today, she noted that continuous heavy rainfall has been occurring across the country since the evening of October 3. She said all state agencies have been deployed and urged the public to follow safety instructions and remain cautious.
Squatter families along Bagmati in Balkhu relocated to school
More than a hundred squatter families living along the Bagmati River in Balkhu, Kathmandu Metropolitan City–14, have been relocated after rising water levels inundated the riverside settlement. Following flooding in the Balkhu–Kuleshwar area, the Armed Police Force transferred the families to Janavikas Secondary School in Balkhu.
16 locations along Nagdhunga-Muglin road at high risk of landslides
With continuous rainfall, 16 locations along the Dhading stretch of the Prithvi Highway and Tribhuvan Highway have been identified as being at high risk of landslides. A joint monitoring conducted today by the District Disaster Management Committee and technical teams revealed major risks of landslides and road collapses along these key routes leading into the capital.
Six highways blocked nationwide due to continuous rainfall
Continuous rainfall since Friday night has triggered landslides at multiple locations, blocking six major highways across the country. Traffic police said several key routes have been completely obstructed, while some areas are operating only one-way traffic. Road networks connecting Kathmandu Valley to other districts have also been disrupted.
Vehicle movement restricted on river corridor roads in Kathmandu Valley from 6 pm to 6 am
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has requested the suspension of vehicle movement along river and stream corridor roads in Kathmandu Valley from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am. In a notice issued today, the Authority urged the district administration offices of Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur to impose restrictions, citing heavy to very heavy rainfall occurring across different parts of the country, including the Valley.
All domestic flights canceled due to bad weather
All domestic flights from Tribhuvan International Airport have been canceled due to adverse weather conditions. According to airport spokesperson Rinji Sherpa, heavy rainfall reduced visibility, forcing the cancellation of all domestic flights.
Panchthar jeep accident leaves six dead, six critically injured
Six people died and six others were critically injured when a jeep met with an accident at Katike in Kummayak Rural Municipality-3 along the Tamor Corridor in Panchthar. According to Police Inspector Rupesh Tamang of the District Police Office, the jeep (Me 1 Ja 3055) was en route from Taplejung to Dharan when it crashed on Saturday afternoon.
Minister Ghising inspects Chobhar-Galchi flood situation
Minister for Energy, Physical Infrastructure, Transport, and Urban Development Kulman Ghising on Saturday inspected the Chobhar-Galchi area to assess the flood situation. He was accompanied by Urban Development Secretary Gopal Sigdel. According to the minister’s secretariat, the site was inspected as rivers flowing through Kathmandu Valley converge at the Galchi section.

Water levels rise in Kathmandu Valley rivers amid continuous rainfall
Continuous rainfall has led to rising water levels in rivers and streams across the Kathmandu Valley, authorities said on Saturday. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology reported swelling in the Bagmati, Hanumante, Manohara, Dhobi Khola, Bishnumati, Nakkhu, and Balkhu rivers, warning that flooding could reach roadside areas and even enter settlements.
Over 250 vehicles turned back from Nagdhunga due to landslides in Dhading
Traffic police have turned back more than 250 vehicles from the Nagdhunga checkpoint, citing poor weather and hazardous road conditions along the Nagdhunga–Muglin section. According to Metropolitan Traffic Police Office chief SSP Nawaraj Adhikari, the vehicles were stopped from heading west after landslides struck several locations in Dhading district. He said there was no immediate possibility of clearing the debris, prompting authorities to divert vehicles back toward Kathmandu.
Highway near Char Kilo in Sindhupalchok caves in, traffic halted
A section of the highway at Char Kilo in Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality–4 has caved in, forcing a complete halt in traffic movement. According to police, the damaged stretch measures around 15 meters in length and about one foot in depth.
Long-distance transport to and from Kathmandu suspended for three days
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has decided to suspend long-distance transport services, including vehicles entering and leaving Kathmandu, for three days. According to a statement issued by the Authority, the decision was taken in view of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s forecast of heavy rainfall until Monday, which could trigger floods, landslides, and inundation.
Traffic police step up awareness drive at key checkpoints as heavy rains raise accident risk
With the monsoon remaining active across the country, traffic police have intensified safety campaigns at major checkpoints, urging drivers to exercise extreme caution amid heightened risks of road accidents. Authorities said heavy rainfall is expected to continue for the next three days, increasing the likelihood of slippery roads, reduced visibility, floods and landslides. Road collapse near Kohinoor Housing puts homes at risk in Kathmandu-14
Several houses have been placed at risk after a section of road near Kohinur Housing in Kathmandu Metropolitan City-14 caved in due to river cutting. According to city officials, the collapse occurred on Monday morning after a landslide eroded part of the road along the riverbank. “Homes situated close to the site could be affected if erosion continues,” the metropolis said in a statement.
Rainfall continues across country, heaviest in Kailali
Significant rainfall has been recorded across the country since early this morning, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Weather Forecasting Division. Rainfall has intensified throughout the day, causing localized flooding in several areas. In the past hour alone, Kathmandu received 6 mm of rain, Lalitpur 9.8 mm, and Bhaktapur 5 mm.
Tribhuvan International Airport closed for two hours due to heavy rainfall
Flights at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) were suspended for two hours on Saturday morning following continuous rainfall in the Kathmandu Valley. Airport spokesperson Jenji Sherpa said both domestic and international flights were halted due to adverse weather conditions. “Flights will resume once the weather clears,” he said.
Kaski DAO urges tourists to avoid trekking due to weather risks
The District Administration Office (DAO), Kaski, has urged tourists to refrain from trekking due to the forecast of heavy rain and potential snowfall in the high Himalayan region. With moderate to heavy rainfall expected across the country—including in Gandaki Province—from today until October 6, the administration has issued a public notice advising against trekking activities.
Vehicles halted at Kavre Bhanjyang and Mangalatar along BP Highway amid heavy rains
Authorities have stopped vehicles entering and leaving the Kathmandu Valley via the BP Highway after continuous downpours triggered safety concerns. Outbound vehicles from the Valley have been halted at Kavre Bhanjyang, while those entering Kathmandu have been stopped at Mangalatar, according to officials. Security personnel stationed along the route said traffic movement would resume only after road conditions are assessed to be safe.
