Kaski DAO urges tourists to avoid trekking due to weather risks

KASKI: The District Administration Office (DAO), Kaski, has urged tourists to refrain from trekking due to the forecast of heavy rain and potential snowfall in the high Himalayan region.

With moderate to heavy rainfall expected across the country—including in Gandaki Province—from today until October 6, the administration has issued a public notice advising against trekking activities.

Assistant Chief District Officer Shiva Prasad Lamsal stated that warnings have been issued for popular trekking destinations such as Annapurna Base Camp (ABC), Mardi Himal Base Camp, Model Machhapuchhre Trek, Kapuche Trek, and Khumai.

“There is a high possibility of snowfall in the Himalayan region. In view of the safety of visitors, we have requested tourists to avoid trekking in these areas,” Lamsal said.

In previous years, the Dashain holiday season would see a large number of trekkers along these routes. However, this year, tourism has taken a hit as the administration’s advisory has discouraged hiking due to adverse weather conditions.

During the Dashain and Tihar holidays, hotels and restaurants along the trekking trails are typically packed with tourists. The administration has also advised the public to remain alert to possible disasters such as floods, landslides, inundation, and snowfall.

In case of emergencies, people are urged to contact the relevant local authorities, people’s representatives, nearby police units, or security agencies.
