KATHMANDU: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has opposed the government’s decision to shut down unregistered social media platforms.
In a statement issued on Thursday, FNJ General Secretary Ram Prasad Dahal said the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology’s decision to restrict unlisted platforms would curtail press freedom and freedom of expression.
“The government has failed to consider that closing social media without alternatives could affect citizens’ right to information,” the statement read.
The FNJ clarified that while it supports regulation of social media, it cannot accept any measures that undermine press freedom or freedom of expression.
The federation urged the government to immediately withdraw restrictions and ensure the protection of citizens’ right to information and press freedom.
