KATHMANDU: Ashok Kumar Chaudhary, a Member of Parliament from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), has accused the government of acting against the public interest by issuing an ultimatum to social media companies to register in Nepal.
Speaking at the start of the House of Representatives meeting on Thursday, Chaudhary said the government was adopting a threatening approach by warning of potential shutdowns of unregistered platforms.
“There is no disagreement that social media needs to be regulated. The Supreme Court has issued a clear mandamus that these platforms must be registered and brought under regulation. The government’s duty is to implement that order to the letter,” he said.
Chaudhary stressed that the process should involve diplomatic negotiations, legal reinforcement, and long-term strategy. “Issuing threats or rushing to shut them down is not the solution. Instead of showing restraint and skill, the government has resorted to giving one-week or two-week ultimatums. This is against public interest,” he added.
