Indra Jatra commences in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: The Indra Jatra festival has begun in Kathmandu Valley today. Celebrated to worship Indra, the god of rain and cooperation, the festival is also known as Yenya Punhi among the Newar community.

The festivities kicked off at Hanuman Dhoka with the erection of the Indra Dhwaja pole at 10:31 am. The eight-day celebration includes traditional dances, chariot processions, and rituals honoring various deities.

Indra Jatra is also regarded as a festival to receive divine blessings through the worship of the Indra Dhwaja, and then demonstrate that spiritual power through public festivities.
