Red alert at Koshi Barrage as water flow crosses danger mark

KATHMANDU: The water level in the Saptakoshi River has risen significantly due to continuous rainfall. According to measurements taken on Sunday evening, the Koshi Barrage recorded a flow of 191,210 cusecs per second.

By Monday morning, the flow had slightly decreased to 175,685 cusecs per second, Armed Police Force Superintendent Nirmal Thapa said. Currently, 23 of the 56 sluice gates, including 52 main gates and four canal gates, have been opened to manage the water flow.

Authorities consider a flow above 150,000 cusecs at the Koshi Barrage to be a danger level. When this threshold is crossed, a red light is switched on as a public warning. The control room at the Koshi Barrage confirmed that the red warning light has been activated.

On September 17, 2008, a flow of 168,000 cusecs had caused the Saptakoshi River to breach its eastern embankment, triggering a major disaster in the area.
