Gold and silver artisans protest luxury tax on gold

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers and Artisans Struggle Committee staged a demonstration on Wednesday demanding the immediate removal of the two percent luxury tax imposed on gold.

The protestors, which included goldsmiths, traders, and consumers, also called for the cancellation of the 13 percent value-added tax (VAT) levied on diamonds, precious stones, and jewelry.

Additionally, they urged the government to introduce a new, inclusive law that safeguards the rights and livelihoods of consumers, employees, artisans, and business owners.

The protest rally started at Maitighar and moved towards Baneshwor, drawing attention from passersby and highlighting concerns over policies that the committee says are detrimental to Nepal’s traditional jewelry and goldsmithing industry.

Earlier, the committee had organized similar protests in various parts of the country. They argue that the new taxes disproportionately burden small artisans and local businesses, threatening the centuries-old craftsmanship and pushing many out of work.
