High Court orders NMA general secretary to appear in court over contempt allegations

KATHMANDU: The Patan High Court has directed Dr. Sanjeev Tiwari, General Secretary of the Nepal Medical Association (NMA), to appear in person within seven days in connection with a contempt of court case.

The joint bench of Justices Shyakumar Bhattarai and Hemanta Rawal issued a show cause order during a preliminary hearing on a petition filed by the Consumer Welfare Protection Forum.

The court has asked Dr. Tiwari to explain why he should not be held in contempt and to provide clear justification and evidence in his defense.

The petition stems from public statements made by Dr. Tiwari and a press release issued on NMA’s official letterhead following a verdict by the Consumer Court.

The court had previously ruled that Grandee City Hospital, Himal Hospital, and Om Hospital were liable to pay compensation for medical negligence. In response, the Nepal Medical Association had launched protests and publicly criticized the ruling, calling it unfair and harmful to the medical profession.

The Consumer Welfare Protection Forum, in its petition, argued that the NMA’s reactions, including public protests and critical remarks against the judiciary, amounted to contempt of court. The forum claims that such actions undermine judicial authority and set a dangerous precedent.

With this order, the court has sought a detailed explanation from Dr. Tiwari regarding his actions and comments.
