Public transport resumes after suspension of transport strike

KATHMANDU: Public transport services have resumed from today after the National Federation of Transport Entrepreneurs suspended its protest program.

Following a request from the federal government, the Gandaki Provincial Government decided to suspend the newly introduced ride-sharing regulations for one month.

In response, transport entrepreneurs called off their ongoing protest and agreed to resume vehicle operations. A joint statement issued by several transport-related organizations confirmed the temporary suspension of the strike.

Bijay Swar, President of the National Federation of Transport Entrepreneurs, stated that the protest programs have been postponed following the provincial government’s move to address their demands. He added that further details will be shared in a press conference today (Wednesday).

Meanwhile, a writ petition was filed at the Supreme Court on Tuesday seeking a ban on shutdowns and strikes in 25 essential sectors, including transportation.

Filed by advocate Bimal Pokharel, the petition is scheduled for hearing on Wednesday. It names the Nepal National Federation of Transport Entrepreneurs, the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure, and the Ministry of Home Affairs as defendants, arguing that transport shutdowns violate legal provisions and infringe on the public’s fundamental rights.
