President Paudel calls for strong opposition to caste-based discrimination

KATHMANDU: President Ram Chandra Paudel has emphasized the need for resolute opposition to caste-based discrimination and untouchability, calling them crimes against social, moral, and human dignity.

In a message issued today on the occasion of the National Day for the Elimination of Caste-based Discrimination and Untouchability, the President extended best wishes for happiness, peace, and prosperity to all Nepali brothers and sisters at home and abroad.

President Paudel stressed that building social awareness and fostering equality among all requires strengthening national unity through mutual harmony, reconciliation, and cooperation among all castes and communities.

He underscored that a firm stand against discrimination is essential to making the democratic state system meaningful.

He urged every individual, family, community, and institution—including government bodies at all three levels, political parties, national and international NGOs, civil society, and media professionals—to remain vigilant and proactive in the fight against untouchability and caste-based discrimination.

“The Constitution of Nepal envisions an egalitarian society grounded in proportional, inclusive, and participatory principles, aiming to ensure economic equality, prosperity, and social justice. It acknowledges Nepal’s multi-ethnic, multilingual, multi-religious, multicultural, and geographically diverse character, while committing to end class, ethnic, regional, linguistic, religious, gender, and caste-based discrimination,” the President said.

He expressed hope that the National Day for the Elimination of Caste Discrimination and Untouchability would motivate concerned institutions to lay the foundation for the gradual eradication of all forms of discrimination—economic, social, political, cultural, and caste-based.
