Gagan Thapa rules out alternative to UML partnership

KATHMANDU: General Secretary of the ruling Nepali Congress (NC), Gagan Thapa, has stated that neither he personally nor his party is currently in a position to consider an alternative to the agreement reached with the CPN-UML.

“As of now, both personally and at the party’s institutional level, we are not even at the initial stage of exploring an alternative to the understanding reached with the UML,” Thapa said.

“I have said before that we want to remain committed to the political agreement we made and implement it with integrity, which has earned us a certain reputation.”

Thapa asserted that the idea of seeking an alternative has not even been discussed. “We have neither considered such an alternative nor held any internal discussions on the matter,” he added.

However, Thapa stressed that the current coalition government must take decisive action, even if it involves certain risks.

“Our only condition now is that the joint government of the Nepali Congress and UML must be willing to take some risks,” he said.

“Whether in the area of good governance or in implementing economic reforms, we must demonstrate through our actions that there is a path to easing public frustration. That is our main objective at this point.”
