Short’s half-century powers Lumbini Lions to five-wicket win over Biratnagar Kings

KATHMANDU: A commanding half-century from opener D’Arcy Short guided Lumbini Lions to a five-wicket victory over Biratnagar Kings in the Nepal Premier League (NPL) Season 2 match on Wednesday.

Chasing a 145-run target at the TU International Cricket Ground, Lumbini reached 145/5 in 17.4 overs. The win has strengthened Lumbini’s chances of reaching the playoffs, taking them to fourth place on the table with six points. Their playoff hopes, however, still depend on the results of other teams.

The defeat marks Biratnagar’s second loss of the tournament. Before this match, the Kings had lost only to Chitwan Rhinos, winning against Karnali Yaks, Janakpur Bolts, Kathmandu Gorkhas, and Pokhara.

For Lumbini, this is their third victory of the season after earlier wins over Pokhara Avengers and Chitwan Rhinos. They had previously lost to Sudurpaschim Royals, Kathmandu Gorkhas, and Karnali Yaks.

Short’s knock proved decisive, as he struck a fluent 57 off 44 balls, including six fours and two sixes, staying at the crease until the second ball of the 13th over. Sundeep Jora contributed 24 off 15 balls, while Dilip Nath added 16 off 11.

Niroshan Dickwella then completed the chase with an unbeaten 29 off 22 balls, ensuring Lumbini crossed the target with ease. Opener Sumit Maharjan chipped in with 10 off 11 balls.

However, Lumbini captain Rohit Paudel failed to make an impact, departing for a duck after facing just three deliveries.
