UML plans nationwide rallies to counter narrative of public disillusionment: Pokharel

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has said that the people will soon make it clear which side they support, stating that the narrative claiming the public has turned away from major parties is baseless.

Speaking at an interaction organized by Press Chautari Nepal in Kathmandu on Monday, Pokharel announced that the UML will hold its 11th General Convention in Kathmandu on December 13–15.

He said the party will organize the largest mass gathering in Nepal’s history during the convention’s opening ceremony.

“To disprove the false narrative that people are disillusioned with the major parties, UML will hold ward-level assemblies nationwide on November 8, municipal rallies on November 11, and district rallies on November 15. A major valley-wide rally will be held on November 22, leading up to our historic gathering on December 13,” Pokharel said.

He added, “We want to show that the people are with us. The people never side with murder or violence.”

Pokharel also claimed that UML is the party with the strongest youth representation, saying it is composed of three generations of leadership and that youth delegates will have a distinct cluster in the convention.

In a separate remark, Pokharel argued that the current government faces a constitutional test, stating that since a related case is sub judice in court, the government should refrain from making major decisions other than preparing for elections.

He further commented that the Gen-Z protest of early September reflected more crime than movement, accusing it of being regressive rather than progressive.

Pokharel said the caretaker government was given a six-month mandate to hold elections and should focus on creating a conducive environment for that purpose. He also called for strict action against those who attack the state and urged the government to boost police morale, warning that escaped convicts have been involved in repeated incidents that threaten public security.
