Lalitpur authorities inspect Chobhar gorge after heavy rainfall warning

LALITPUR: Anticipating days of heavy rainfall, the Lalitpur District Administration Office has carried out an inspection of the Chobhar gorge, the Kathmandu Valley’s major water outlet.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast intense monsoon rains between October 3 and 6, prompting Chief District Officer (CDO) Suman Ghimire and members of the District Security Committee to assess potential risks at Chobhar, through which the Bagmati and Nakkhu rivers exit the valley.

CDO Ghimire said the inspection was aimed at assessing possible impacts on surrounding areas and ensuring public safety. He urged residents near the gorge to remain vigilant.

Authorities have also imposed night-time travel restrictions on the Kanti Lokmarg, banning vehicular movement from 4 p.m. to 6 a.m. until October 6.

The administration has instructed municipalities, including Bagmati Rural Municipality and other southern settlements, to arrange temporary relocation for households at risk of floods and landslides.

“All necessary preparedness measures have been taken to minimize disaster risks,” CDO Ghimire said.
