Rainfall expected across all provinces today

KATHMANDU: The Weather Forecasting Division has predicted rainfall across all provinces today (Friday), with a chance of heavy rainfall in certain regions.

According to the Division, skies will remain generally cloudy throughout the country during the day. Moderate rainfall is likely at a few places in the hills and Terai of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, as well as in the hills and Terai of other provinces, including Madhes.

One or two locations in the hills and Terai of Lumbini, Karnali, and Bagmati provinces could experience heavy rainfall.

Tonight, cloud cover will persist nationwide. Moderate rainfall is expected in the hills and Terai of Koshi, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, and in some areas of Madhes and the remaining provinces.

There is also a possibility of heavy rainfall at one or two locations in Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Lumbini, and Gandaki provinces. The Meteorological Division clarified that the term “day” refers to the time before 6 p.m., while “night” refers to the period from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day.

Based on meteorological standards, rainfall below 10 millimeters in a 24-hour period is classified as light, 10 to 50 millimeters as moderate, 50 to 100 millimeters as heavy, 100 to 200 millimeters as very heavy, and more than 200 millimeters as extremely heavy rainfall.

Similarly, forecasts mentioning rain in “one or two places” indicate a likelihood of rainfall in less than 10 percent of a given area. If rainfall is expected in 10 to 30 percent of an area, it is described as occurring in “a few places.”

Rainfall in 30 to 50 percent of an area is referred to as occurring in “some places,” while 50 to 80 percent coverage is termed as “many places.” If over 80 percent of an area is likely to receive rainfall, the forecast uses the phrase “most places.”
