Prime Minister directs authorities to step up disaster preparedness and response

The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers has directed the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, provincial disaster management committees, district committees, and local committees to enhance preparedness and response efforts with high urgency. Issuing a statement today, the Prime Minister’s Secretariat urged all bodies to ensure effective preparedness, response, search and rescue, relief, and rehabilitation measures to minimize risks from disasters.

Minister Ghising denies involvement with Ujyaalo Nepal Party

Minister for Energy, Kulman Ghising, has clarified that he has no affiliation with the Ujyaalo Nepal Party. In a statement, Ghising expressed serious concern over news reports and social media posts linking his name with the party and its chairperson. He stressed that there has been no discussion about his involvement in the party, as reported, nor will he be participating in any Zoom meetings.

Authorities urge caution on Kotree–Muglin–Nagdhunga and Muglin–Narayangadh roads

The District Administration Offices of Tanahun, Chitwan, and Dhading have issued a joint notice urging travelers to exercise caution while using the Kotree–Muglin–Nagdhunga and Muglin–Narayangadh sections of the Prithvi Highway. According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, heavy rainfall is forecast between October 3 to 6. Officials warned that such conditions could increase the risk of accidents and road blockages along these stretches.

Avoid long-distance travel from October 3 to 6 unless urgent: Disaster Management Authority

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has urged the public to avoid long-distance travel between October 3–6) unless absolutely necessary, due to the forecast of widespread rainfall in several regions. According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, moderate to heavy rainfall is likely across Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces during this period. River levels—particularly in the Narayani, Bagmati, Kamala, and Koshi rivers—may rise significantly and could approach or exceed danger levels.

Human Rights Commission continues complaint registration, monitoring during Dashain leave

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said it will continue registering complaints and monitoring urgent incidents even during the Dashain holidays across all of its 11 offices, including the central office in Lalitpur. According to NHRC spokesperson Tika Ram Pokharel, the Janakpur provincial office has so far received one complaint of a human rights violation, which was immediately monitored by the office itself.

Home Minister calls for effective and people-centered disaster management

Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal has instructed relevant authorities to ensure that disaster management efforts are both effective and centered on the needs of the people. Minister Aryal emphasized the urgency of preparedness in light of forecasts predicting moderate to very heavy rainfall from October 3 to 6 across five provinces: Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini. He also stressed the importance of maintaining good governance and ensuring the continuity of essential public services during times of crisis.

EC to hold federal, provincial and local elections in separate phases

Nepal’s election calendar is set for a major shift, with the federal, provincial, and local polls now to be held in separate phases rather than simultaneously. The Election Commission has confirmed that the next House of Representatives elections will take place on March 5, 2026, while the provincial and local level elections will be conducted in 2027. The change follows the unexpected dissolution of the House of Representatives in the wake of the Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9, which forced then–Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign.

Three-night traffic ban imposed in Makawanpur amid weather risks

The Makawanpur District Administration Office has announced a three-night vehicular movement ban in response to heightened weather risks, including potential heavy rainfall and landslides. According to the decision, Kantilokpath, the highway connecting Hetauda to Lalitpur, will be closed from 4 p.m. to 6 a.m. from today to October 6. Likewise, vehicular traffic on the Hetauda–Bhainse–Kathmandu section will be halted between 5 p.m. and 6 a.m. during the same period, according to the CHief District Office, Makwanpur.

One killed, 20 injured in bus accident in Mahottari

One person was killed and 20 others injured in a bus accident that occurred this morning in Khairmara, Bardibas Municipality, Mahottari. Four of the injured are reported to be in critical condition. The accident involved a Kathmandu-bound bus (Na 6 Kha 14630) traveling from Khairmara. According to the Area Police Office in Bardibas, the deceased has been identified as Chulhai Chaudhary, an 80-year-old local resident. One passenger had to be rescued after being trapped inside the overturned bus.

Country under influence of both monsoon and local winds

The current weather conditions across Nepal are being influenced by both monsoon and local wind systems. According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the weather remained generally cloudy across the country today, with moderate rainfall in some hilly and Terai areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces. A few places in the hilly and Terai regions of Madhesh Province also experienced moderate rain.

Mahesh Basnet warns government against politics of retaliation

CPN-UML leader Mahesh Basnet has warned the government not to engage in politics of retaliation. In a social media post, Basnet cautioned that if investigations are driven by revenge, there would be strong resistance. He further remarked that such moves could complicate the situation.

Lalitpur authorities inspect Chobhar gorge after heavy rainfall warning

Anticipating days of heavy rainfall, the Lalitpur District Administration Office has carried out an inspection of the Chobhar gorge, the Kathmandu Valley’s major water outlet. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast intense monsoon rains between October 3 and 6, prompting Chief District Officer (CDO) Suman Ghimire and members of the District Security Committee to assess potential risks at Chobhar, through which the Bagmati and Nakkhu rivers exit the valley.

India and China to resume direct flights after a 5-year suspension

India and China plan to resume direct flights between some of their cities after a five-year suspension as the relations between the two countries begin to thaw, Indian authorities announced Thursday. Direct flights between the two countries were suspended during the Covid pandemic in 2020 and did not resume as Beijing and New Delhi engaged in prolonged border tensions.

Monsoon withdrawal expected to be delayed this year

The monsoon, which arrived in Nepal on May 28 and spread across the country by June 20, is likely to be prolonged this year. According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the monsoon became active again from October 2 (Thursday), even though it was in its late phase. Senior meteorologist Min Kumar Aryal said that although June 13 is the tentative date for the monsoon’s arrival in Nepal, this year it arrived 15 days earlier. Similarly, its withdrawal is also likely to be delayed.

NHRC calls for reports on child marriage impact

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for submission of reports and documents related to the impact of child marriage on human rights as part of a nationwide inquiry. The commission said the study aims to assess and review the multidimensional adverse effects of child marriage on basic rights including education, health, protection from violence, and overall human rights.
