Govt asked to clarify its stance on China’s Global Security Initiative

KATHMANDU: CPN (Unified Socialist) lawmaker Prakash Jwala has demanded a formal statement from the government regarding China’s claim that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has endorsed its Global Security Initiative (GSI).

Speaking during a special session of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Jwala highlighted a statement from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs following a meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Oli. The statement claimed that Oli had pledged Nepal’s support for the GSI, a move Jwala said goes against Nepal’s non-aligned foreign policy.

“According to Nepal’s constitution, Nepal is committed to a non-aligned foreign policy. Nepal cannot take a side in any military strategy,” said Jwala. “If the Prime Minister has supported the GSI, there is a danger that we will be caught in the security web of powerful nations. That would be suicidal and objectionable. The government must immediately make an official statement on this matter.”

Jwala also called for Prime Minister Oli to address the parliament upon his return to Nepal.

“The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s statement, issued after Prime Minister KP Oli’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to China, clearly claims that Nepal has supported its security strategy, the GSI,” Jwala stated. “The statement says, ‘Nepal supports the Global Security Initiative proposed by China.’ What is the reality of this? The Government of Nepal has not yet released an official statement on this matter.”
