RSP accuses ruling coalition of spreading deepfake audio

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Member of Parliament Hari Dhakal has accused the ruling coalition of resorting to spreading deepfake voice recordings of his party’s leaders because they are unable to engage in constructive debate in the House.

Speaking at the beginning of Wednesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Dhakal claimed that instead of engaging in a productive discussion, the ruling side has been widely disseminating deepfake voice recordings of RSP leaders.

“You are making false accusations against us in a harsh, chaotic, and intolerant manner,” Dhakal said. “Unable to have a creative debate with us inside this House, they have started spreading deepfake voice recordings of our leaders outside. I want to condemn this style, this behavior.”

Dhakal also stated that for the past 95 days, ruling party MPs have spent hours countering the two-minute statements made by RSP MPs in the House.

“When we protested against human trafficking and corruption in the name of visit visas, the ruling side didn’t listen,” Dhakal said. “Honorable members of the ruling side have spent hours over the last 95 days refuting our two-minute speeches.”

He concluded by arguing that suppressing voices of dissent would not strengthen democracy and reiterated that the RSP’s protest and boycott of the House would continue.
