8 passengers jumped out before bus plunged off cliff in Tanahun

TANAHUN: CCTV footage has emerged showing the terrifying moment a bus en route from Gorkha to Narayangadh, Chitwan, lost control and fell off a cliff in Tanahun’s Ainapahara area on Sunday afternoon.

The accident injured five passengers, two of them critically, according to the police.

The bus, registered as Ga 2 Kha 1077, had stopped at a parking area in AanbuKhaireni Rural Municipality-2 for a break. As it was pulling out of the spot, the brakes reportedly failed, sending the bus approximately 50 meters down a slope near the Marsyangdi river.

Footage shows the driver reversing the bus from the parking area when it suddenly picked up speed and veered off the road. Within 10 seconds of starting to reverse, the bus plunged downward uncontrollably.

The video also captures a harrowing moment: upon realizing the brakes had failed, passengers began leaping from the door to save themselves. Eight people, many of them women, can be seen jumping out in a panic as the bus rolls backward.

At least 13 passengers were believed to be on board at the time, with five found at the accident site.

The front section of the bus was severely damaged and got stuck mid-slope before being pulled out using a crane.

Police have taken the driver into custody, who confirmed that brake failure was the cause of the crash.
