Flood risk in 47 districts today; ‘Yellow Alert’ issued

KATHMANDU: The Flood Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a Yellow Alert for 47 districts, warning of potential flooding due to rising river levels.

According to this morning’s flood measurements, major rivers such as the Koshi, Narayani, Karnali, Mahakali, Kamala, Bagmati, East Rapti, West Rapti, Babai, and Kankai are currently flowing below alert levels. However, the division has warned that their flow is likely to increase throughout the day, raising the risk of flooding.

The Division has also reported a moderate risk of flash floods in small rivers flowing through various districts. In eastern and central Nepal, districts such as Ilam, Jhapa, Udayapur, Sindhuli, Kavrepalanchok, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Bara, Parsa, and Chitwan are likely to experience a significant rise in river flow.

Similarly, in western and mid-western regions, districts including Pyuthan, Rukum West, Nawalparasi (East and West), Jajarkot, Dolpa, Dailekh, Surkhet, Kailali, and Kanchanpur are also expected to see increasing water levels and face a moderate risk of flash flooding.

In addition, the water flow in rivers passing through Morang, Sunsari, Taplejung, Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu, Bhojpur, Khotang, Dhankuta, Tehrathum, Panchthar, Syangja, Tanahun, Dhading, Nuwakot, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk, Bardiya, Parbat, Baglung, Myagdi, Achham, Dadeldhura, and Darchula is also expected to increase significantly. These areas have also been assessed as being at moderate risk of flash floods.

The Department has forecast heavy rainfall later in the day across six provinces, including Madhes Province. The increase in rainfall could further raise the chances of local flooding and landslides, particularly in low-lying and riverbank areas.

In light of these risks, the Flood Forecasting Division has urged residents in the affected districts to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
