Jhapa sees up to 129 mm of rainfall in 24 hours

BIRTAMOD: Continuous rainfall has raised the risk of flooding in several parts of Jhapa district. According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, up to 129 mm of rainfall was recorded in the past 24 hours in areas including Anarmani, Chandragadhi, and Kechana.

Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone areas—particularly in Kachankawal, Bardashi, Jhapa, Gauriganj, and Kankai municipalities—to remain alert.

As part of the early warning system, flood sirens installed with the support of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Authority have been activated in Bhagdubba (Bardashi Rural Municipality-3) and Pindalbari (Kachankawal Rural Municipality-5). Similar systems are also functioning in Kuwadi (Jhapa Rural Municipality) and Keybari (Gauriganj Rural Municipality-5).

“These sirens provide early flood warnings from a distance, helping residents move to safety,” said Anju Thapaliya, acting chairperson of Jhapa Rural Municipality. “We are prioritizing risk reduction through awareness, preparedness, and relocation efforts.”

Kankai Municipality Mayor Rajendra Kumar Pokharel confirmed that the water level in the Kankai River is rising, and nearby areas are on high alert. “The municipal disaster management committee is active. If necessary, we are prepared to carry out immediate rescue, relief, and relocation operations,” he said.

Chief District Officer of Jhapa, Gopal Adhikari, stated that rescue and relief operations have been pre-arranged in coordination with the District Administration Office, local governments, and security agencies. “Monitoring of high-risk zones is ongoing,” he added.

Local resident Hari Rajbanshi reported that volunteers have been mobilized in vulnerable areas and residents are being urged to relocate to safer ground.

The Asian Highway Project has also prepared for potential disruptions caused by rising river levels. Due to the high risk of flooding at several diversions—including Kalikhola (Mechinagar Municipality), Elephant Crossing, and Bhalukhola (west of the Mai River)—heavy equipment such as JCBs and excavators are on standby, confirmed Project Chief Engineer Sunil Babu Pant.

Mechinagar Mayor Gopal Chandra Budhathoki said his office has coordinated with the project to prepare for emergencies. “We have mobilized an engineering team for emergency repairs and set up a rescue unit in collaboration with the Asian Highway Project, in case flooding disrupts road access,” he said.

Experts have advised residents living in low-lying and riverside settlements across Kachankawal, Jhapa, Bardashi, Gauriganj, and Kankai municipalities to take immediate precautions and stay informed through local authorities.
