Pro-monarchy supporters resume protests after day of mourning

KATHMANDU: Pro-monarchy activists demanding the reinstatement of the monarchy and a Hindu state held a demonstration on Tuesday at Sifal Ground in Kathmandu as part of their ongoing campaign against the republic.

The group, which has been organizing protests since May 29 — the day Nepal was declared a republic in 2008 — had paused their demonstrations on Monday to commemorate the Narayanhiti Royal Palace massacre of June 1, 2001.

“Monday’s pause was a mark of mourning in memory of the Royal Palace massacre,” organizers said. They resumed demonstrations on Tuesday as part of their broader agenda.

The royalists have been demanding a national referendum on the monarchy and the restoration of Nepal as a Hindu state, reversing the secular and republican provisions enshrined after the 2006 People’s Movement.
