Frequent earthquakes continue to shake western Nepal

KATHMANDU: A 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Luma in Mugu on Friday morning at 8:03 am, according to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center.

This tremor adds to a series of small earthquakes that have been continuously affecting western Nepal.

The Far West and Karnali regions, in particular, have experienced frequent seismic activity.

Since the 5.2-magnitude earthquake centered near Gotri in Jagannath Rural Municipality, Bajura, on December 21, aftershocks and subsequent quakes have been persistent.

The Center reports that earthquakes larger than magnitude 4 have occurred nine times in these regions this year until December 31.

The affected areas include Darchula, Jajarkot, Baitadi, and Mugu. Additionally, dozens of smaller tremors have been recorded, heightening concerns about ongoing seismic activity in the region.
